What is LGBTQ+ Equity Week?

LGBTQ+ Equity Week will take place from October 7-11 in honor of National Coming Out day on October 11, a day that commemorates the National March on Washington For Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1987.  During the week, students pre-K through 8th grade will engage in week long curricula that delves into age appropriate topics pertaining to LGBTQ+ Identities and historical figures.

*Lesson plans are only available for viewing for District 65 staff at this time while curriculum undergoes revision based on feedback from the week. It will be visible for public viewing again soon. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for understanding!*
Thanks for a great week everybody!

Why does District 65 have a LGBTQ+ Equity Week?

Evanston is a diverse community made of many family structures and gender identities. LGBTQ+ Equity week seeks to level academic disparities that have historically left these identities out of the curriculum and out of the schools. Our hope is that LGBTQ+ Equity Week will foster a deeper sense of allyship within our school communities and ensure the inclusion of all families, staff, and students that walk through our doors.

What will be taught?

Pre-School/Kindergarten: Students will learn about their identities and the identities of others. They will explore concepts of families, gendered toy and clothing stereotypes, colors and meaning, flags, allyship and identity.

1st grade: Through shared reading and writing experiences using the book They, She, He, Easy as ABC by maya & matthew, students will learn how to introduce themselves using their name and pronouns and will practice using others’ names and pronouns.

2nd Grade-3rd Grade: Students will recognize and discuss stereotypes in fairy tales, and create their own inclusive fairy tale to share with lower grades.

4th grade- 5th Grade:  Students will watch a PBS documentary about a girl who dreams of leading the boy-only Hula troop and a teacher who empowers her through Indigenous culture.  By the end of the week, students will have been inspired to create their own gender inclusive  advertisement for a product.

6th Grade-8th Grade: Students will learn about various activists and activist strategies employed by the LGBTQ+ community.  They will identify a movement that they feel strongly about and will create locker posters to draw awareness to that issue.

Differentiated Curriculum: This curriculum is designed for students with exceptional needs. Students will learn about each of the colors on the intersectional pride flag. They will explore the meaning of those colors through hands on activities.

I have some concerns about this curriculum...

Given that LGBTQ+ Identities have historically been left out of the curriculum, it is expected that there will be some wondering about how this will look in our schools. All lessons are developmentally appropriate for all students.  Still not convinced? Check out this great resource from Welcoming Schools.

Feel free to reach out to the GSEA with any other concerns you may have.
